What is expertise? It’s something that someone is good at, has experience in and knowledge of. I am no expert in any school subject because school work and life in general can cause me a lot of stress. I sometimes have trouble balancing daily life which becomes stressful. There are things that all people need in order to relieve stress and it seems that these things can often become areas of expertise. When life throws me a curveball, it can and usually shocks me. :Though I know at some point soon I must react. What I have found over the years is that running is something I excel in, enjoy and I consider myself an expert. Running is what I do to handle my stress, if time permits. It helps me release my built up anxiety and energy. My dad had always been a runner as long as I can remember; I picked up the habit from him. I love running because it keeps me in shape and it is an outlet for me. During my junior and senior years in high school, I participated in track and cross country. It was while participating in these two sports that I realized how much running helped me relieve my stress and how good I could become.
Initially, I was not very good at running. It took time for me to train my brain into being able to force my body to run faster for longer. My legs picked it up quickly, but my brain always told me to stop. Beating my mind was the hardest part to overcome and improve. I was lucky that my results were quick. From just one season to the next, I had improved dramatically. My first year I was running 7 minute miles during a 5k (3.1 miles) race. I ran a lot during the summer and teammates noticed my increase in speed. I went to practice and ran a mile in under 6 minutes for the first time in my life. With all the hard work, coaches recognized me as a top 7 runner and awarded me with a varsity jersey. I was now completing every race in under 20 minutes.
I continued my running throughout the year and noticed more and more improvement in short amounts of time. From the end of indoor track during the winter of junior year to the spring of senior year, I had taken nearly one minute off of my mile time. Junior year it took me 6 minutes and 15 seconds to run one mile. During track my senior year, I was competitively running the mile in 5 minutes and 20 seconds. I went from being a “middle of the pack” runner to a top runner in track. Let’s just say that my coaches were dumbfounded, they never thought I would have made that much improvement. Quite honestly, neither did I. It’s not that I didn’t think it was possible, I just didn’t know that the things I was doing were slowly getting me closer to the top with every step.
Personally, I am amazed that this all happened the way it did. I was impressed which takes a lot to do because I have always had high expectations for myself. Running is not something that comes easy to people, nor is it something that people like to do. This is why running is an expertise, it is a passion and it makes me happy. Not only am I good at it, I can also help others get better if they are willing to improve. This summer I ran with a good friend of mine almost every day. She was already a top runner for the girls’ cross country team and now she is the number one runner. By just working at something that we both enjoyed, there was a vast improvement. It took a lot of work and dedication but by the end of it all, it was worth it. Running may take some sacrifices, the physical toll does add up after a while.
Running is a passion and it hopefully always will be. I may not be the fastest runner in the world nor most motivational person. However, I am able to improve and motivate myself, which is sometimes enough to inspire others. I do hope that people believe that there are so many things we can all do that will help us relieve stress. Being an expert doesn’t necessarily mean sticking to a strict schedule. Running is about going with the flow or with what is given. For example, I do not run every day because I may not have time or I just may need rest. I turn to running when I need it most, when my mind is troubled or when I need to escape. Once I start running I can just go and keep going. It’s like nothing can stop me. I have to tell myself when to be done. It seems crazy but if I never had anything to do, I would just run across the world. I would see as much of the world as quickly or as slowly as I please. There are so many other benefits of running. Some are: seeing the world in a direct and slow view, meeting new people, staying in shape, it’s great exercise and most importantly, the feeling of victory when a challenge has been completed. The ambition to do things that are hard to imagine sees like an important part of becoming an expert.
Running is an integral part of my life that I will continue because of how well it relieves my stress. It takes my brain from a jumbled mess after a full day of classes, to the efficient tool it was meant to be. Instead of wasting time eating or playing video games, I would run to relieve my mind and help it get back into focus. Assignments that seemed so big and impossible became tiny and manageable. I found that there was even more time to spend with my friends and more time to meet new people. I found myself not as wrapped up with school and stress and more wrapped up in hanging out with friends and family. It seems like my grades would have taken a plummet for the worse, but my grades actually improved. I was finally making high honors again and life was at an all-time high. I am forever tied to running for giving me my life back and giving me hope.
I really believe running builds character because it is a challenge; give up or complete it. Running is like a shorter version of life with every step, the closer and closer a goal becomes. Even though some may hate it at the beginning, the end will justify the means and at some point there is something to enjoy. I like running, I like relieving my stress and I like staying in shape. Life always throws curveballs and other challenges on a daily basis and it can be very hard to balance and manage at times. Everyone must deal with anxiety and stress. As important as dealing with these emotions is finding something productive and useful that will help relieve them in a positive way. When life gets me down, I run. Running is not for everyone but there is always something that is worth spending time doing and that gives us a sense of accomplishment. Running was the thing I found out I loved and it keeps a smile on my face.
